Boxer — Breed of Dog? What do you think of them?
ByDoes anyone have a boxer? what do you think of the breed? At first i wanted a small little lap dog, but now i am thinking of getting a boxer to protect me, and i hear they are energetic and playful which I would like. Does anyone have experience with boxers? thanks!

in my oppinion you should get a pembroke welsh corgi. i have one and its very very protective of its owners. this year so far he’s gotten like 7 rats. plus he barks at anyone who comes close to our back fence.

The Boxer is the most lovable intelligent and easily trainable dog I have ever had. However they can be high strung and anxious. If you live in a calm healthy household the Boxer is the best. They love to play and they become members of the family very quickly

Boxers are very nice and fun dogs. They are sweet and playful. If you want a dog for protection a boxer would be good because they look scary. Dobermans however are the best dogs protection wise. Believe it or not they too are playful and sweet. I had a Dobie and he slept in my bed with me and I took him everywhere. Hope this helped.

Hi Olive,
I used to raise and train Boxer’s and think they are the greatest dogs in the world. They are fairly intelligent, energetic, and loyal. The one thing I dislike about them is they jump fences. If you will be walking yours, this will not be an issue for you. They are great with children, and most are not aggressive. Many people will tell you to get a breed of dog they have, but I say if you want a Boxer, Great Choice!

For the right person, they’re brilliant. They do need lots of exercise though and while the sheer look of one might deter potential attackers or intruders, if you actually did get any trouble, chances are any dog despite what breed it is (unless bred, vetted and trained by professional trainers) would probably run off on you rather than stay and fight. Please never get a dog solely to protect you – you’re supposed to protect the dog if it’s just a pet!

my mate goes mad over them, i dont know why. they always seemed to me like a dog that would slobber everywhere, im more of a english bull terrier guy.

I adore Boxers. But, you shouldn’t get one “to protect you”. If you are in danger, an alarm system, a louisville sugger, a taser, or a gun are far more reliable.
Yes, they are very energetic and playful. While these are wonderful attributes of the breed, it’s also the #1 reason they are given up. Most people aren’t prepared for the energy level of the breed. 1-2 hours a day of activity is usually needed. Not just walking, but running, playing, frisbee, agility, obedience, fetch, etc. An underexercised Boxer will literally eat your house, your floors, your walls, your furniture. . .
They also need a strong willed owner who will keep the dog up on proper training. An untrained Boxer will run you over and knock you down.
If you get one, be sure to use ONLY a good breeder. Boxers from bad breeders are LOADED with severe genetic problems. Everything from hip dysplasia to cherry eye to cancer.
Here are a few wonderufl links for you to read about the breed and who to get one from:

hi,
Boxers were originally bred to be medium-size guard dogs. Today, although they are a part of the AKC’s Working Group, they mostly find homes as loving family companions.
here’s more info:

hope this helps.

Boxers are very energetic and playful dogs. They are also good guard dogs. They are also good with kids.
Boxers are also dominant dogs, so they need someone who’s good with training. They’re bad for people who don’t have a lot of time to train the dog.
