We have a 13 year old dalmatian. He was diagnosed about a year and half ago with heart murmer so Vet said he had an enlarging heart that would eventually grow so big it would slowly crowd everything….he wouldn’t just drop dead like a human. So now our dog is hacking all night long. I can’t sleep…it is worse than having a newborm. He hacks probably about every 5 minutes and gags, this goes on until about 3 or 4 AM before he finally gets to sleep. If we banish him the basement (always slept in our room), he whines even louder. I think it is time to put him down, he isn’t going to get any better and has also started having the odd accident. My husband thinks it is too early. That his tail wags, gets around and is otherwise okay. He is partially right, other than this wicked cough…he is still pretty good. The messes are annoying and he has some trouble on stairs at times, but overall a pretty happy dog still. But the couging, it’s bad….poor thing. What do we do? Is it time or wait? And what do I do with him? I can’t sleep…getting irritable.

What Can I Do About My Dog’s Leg Pain?

Posted by: | Comments (8)

She’s a smaller sized dalmatian, about 12 years old. She does have arthritis, and lately it’s been bothering her a lot. She needs help getting up, and when she’s up she squeals when she puts a lot of pressure on her hind legs, or when someone touches them. It’s too late to call the vet, and even it wasn’t I’m so broke, there’s really no way I could afford to take her. Is there anything I can do to help relieve her pain? Even if it’s just temporarily. Please help my poor dog.
First of all, I do my schooling online, so they pay for my internet and give me computers, so that’s why I have access to a computer. I’m sorry that I don’t have money, it doesn’t mean that I don’t care. It means that I’m having a hard time. And I’m in debt with the vet, so they can’t make a payment plan with me. I do try, and I do care. I didn’t post this to be harassed, I posted it to get help. If you’re just going to criticize me, that’s not going to help. Not a single person has any idea?
Thank you to the people who give me helpful answers, I’ll try anything I can. =/

We play this game where we both lay down, and I roll him over by pushing him. He growls and bites my arm (never clamping, just putting it in his mouth) and then comes back for more. Today, however, he barked at me and he had never done that before, just growling. Could I just be pissing him off? I am confused, why would he continue to come back and “play” if he was mad? He is a rescue dog, and I got him about 3 weeks ago. We have played like this probably 8-10 times. He is a dalmatian.

I’m prettty technical when it comes to medical issues with dogs, but I would like for someone with this expertise to help me understand some test results.

One year ago, prior to a sugery, we did a blood panel on my dog for anestesia purposes…it came back with the following:

BUN 34
Creatinine 1.8

The doctor was not concerned – he administered IV fluids for the procedure to be on the safe side, but said it may have been elevated to the stress of being at the vet hospital.

This week I had a complete blood panel done on her because she seemed depressed and not feeling well at all…everything was great, but the kidney function came back with the following:

BUN 31
Creatintine 2.2

NOW – here is where I just want to kick myself…and believe me I’ve been very upset about this all day…Recently my fridge broke and to salvage all of the fish, pork tenderloin, etc…I fed it to the dogs..Pure protein and tons of it…

THEN…I changed their food at the same time to a food that is awesome (Orijen), but the protein is almost 37 in the type I got.

So this is what she was eating for about 2 weeks prior to the blood work (and the freezer stuff).

1) I’m assuming that can have an impact on the creatinine results…I would like some insight on that…

2) Let’s remove the higher protein scenario and just focus on the test results – what do they suggest and how bad are they?

My vets recommendation is to start her on a low protein diet (13% – 16%), do subcutaneous injections once a week (she’ll show me how to do this at home) and start her on Azodyl.

She is a 7 year old Dalmatian.

Thanks for helping me out with this.
Please only serious answers from a credible source/experience…this is a serious situation for us.
This just happened today and I was only able to have a 10 minute phone conversation with my vet about it. I’m just eager to have some additional advice to help me with this information.
Obviously this was a mistake to post this on here…Good Lord..It’s Friday on a holiday weekened..I’m anxious about this..just thought there might be someone who is a vet or tech or something who could shed some light.

As I said on my original post, only reply if you are a credible resource….I don’t care if I don’t get any replies, but you never know….

Why firemen have dogs. now this is funny?

Posted by: | Comments (8)

A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past.

Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog.

The children fell to discussing the dog’s duties.

“They use him to keep crowds back,” said one youngster.

“No,” said another, “he’s just for good luck.”

A third child brought the argument to a close. “They use the dogs,”

she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrant.”

The dog I adopted is coming home tomorrow but she isn’t exactly obedience trained. She had a rough past so she is afraid of a lot of things and doesn’t feel very safe I think. So, I am going to work with her to try and change that.

I am going to try training her by letting her know that she can’t get what she wants whenever she wants. I want to establish myself as the leader so that she will listen to me. For example, I allow her on the bed but not until I ask her to get on.

My question is, what if she gets on the bed before I tell her to? I know I should get her off but how do I go about doing that? Should I just firmly say “off” or “down”? And then what if she still doesn’t listen? How do I get her down? I don’t want to physically try and remove her because like I said she is very scared so she might bite if I try to pick her up.

She is a 2 year old Dalmatian female.
I am not afraid of the dog, but she has been mistreated before. I don’t want her to think that when I try to lift her off the bed, that I’m trying to hurt her. So I want to avoid scaring her.

How to calm down a hyperactive dog?

Posted by: | Comments (5)

I have a boxer/dalmatian mix. He is WAAAY too hyper. I weigh 85 lbs and am only 5’1″.. he is almost 65 lbs and can take me out. He jumps, a lot, knocking me down and hurting me. I try to just pet him and play with him but he always ends up hurting me by either jumping, stepping on me, pushing me, etc. He goes outside to play for 2 hours daily. In this time he plays non-stop with our other dog. He runs back and forth and jumps all around. I take him to the dog park once a week for about an hour. I also take him on walks every other day, these walks last only 30 minutes because he is just too big for me and pulls me. What can I do to get him to calm down? At least to stop hurting me and pulling/pushing me?!
I’ve tried all the harness and non-pull type things to correct pulling. Non of them work. When he jumps I say “NO, DOWN” and turn away (this is what a trainer told me to do). He just does it again! I push him off the second time he does it and he thinks I am playing. I keep saying “NO, BAD” or other phrases of that nature, he doesn’t get it. If I try to pet him he jumps up or nibbles my hand. I got him just a few months ago from the shelter. He is appr 2-3 years of age. He knows how to “sit” “lay down” “no” “shake” but he just won’t do it unless you have food. Also, when we have guests over he pretty much mauls (does the same thing he does to me except more enthusiastic) them!! I won’t even let my friends come over anymore because of him.
Oh, and he barks non stop. When he is playing, when he is bored, when he is doing ANYTHING… or doing NOTHING. I don’t have much money to spend on obedience classes or barking fixes (shock collar, bark box, etc). HELPPP
