I just noticed one of them has a large lump on his hind quarters last thursday near his anal glands. i took him to the vet friday thinking the gland was impacted. he said it was not the gland, it appears to be a fatty tumor (lipoma). so i went home and checked the other pup and he has one in the same exact location! is there something i am doing that could cause them? is it strange that they both have these “fatty tumors” in the same identical location. could it be something else? they are always playing and i have hard floors as well as my patio is all stone. I am going to be taking them in to get neutered so they are going to remove them at the same time but i want to make sure i am doing everything i can to help prevent them in the future. they are so young…
They are from the same litter. My parents have their sisters from the same littler and a friend has their prother. None of them have lipomas. I feel like it is something I have done. (enviromental or food… or could they have injured themselves) I am so concerned because they are so young.

My grandmother has several show poodles that she breeds occasionally- usually after the bitch is retired from show to acquire a new show dog. (She shows for about four years per dog, so they are bred at around 3-4 years, no earlier or later than that.) The rest of the pups are held until she can spay and neuter, and then they are sold.

Anyways, in the last four years, she has bred only one of her poodles twice, however each time only produced one pup which was larger tham either parent.. She usually only keeps one pup from any litters anyhow, but recently she was wondering if her bitch has an imbalance in hormones or otherwise that caused her to produce only one offspring? The bitch is already spayed, having already reached four years and is retired.

The litter she was from was from another breeder, both her parents were AKC reg. both sides had champ lines, however she was the only female in her litter- could this have anything to do with it? I’m no expert on dogs seeing as I don’t breed them, but I do know when a female cow is born twin to a male she has a much lower chance of becoming pregnant, and that kind of seemed alike to me.

Has anyone had a lab that had IMHA?

Posted by: | Comments (2)

I had a black lab who was ten years old, male, who was diagnosed with IMHA. He had chemo treatment and tests done but sadly we had to put him down this past summer. It took a long time for me to recover from this devastating event. I still cry sometimes. I now have a yellow lab puppy, but i was wondering if anyone had a lab with IMHA? Is it common for labs to have this? I know that larger dogs are more likely to have this and poodles, but i just hope that my puppy now doesnt get this.

Insanity with the neighbors dog?

Posted by: | Comments (3)

Here’s the situation. We have neighbors who live directly across from us, they are Latino, and there’s 5-6 of them that live in a home no bigger than ours, they have a few add-ons and have lived in this neighborhood for a very long time. They do not cause any disturbances and keep their yard clean. They are genuinely good people. However over the past three years they have been chaining this small white poodle to a pole under their car port. Understandable I wouldn’t want my dog to get muddy when it rains, and have a bit of shelter. They leave this dog out there for hours at a time, not three or four but ten to twelve at a time, sometimes it’s over night. This dog will bark and bark and bark, and not at anything, just barks. It is the same high pitched bark over and over for hours at a time. Sure dogs are meant to bark, it’s their way of communicating. If our dog barks for awhile I will go see what’s up, usually its at the mailman, or kids, but she stops.
I have seen this dog get off her chain and chase the mailman, who has unloaded a can of pepper spray on it. I have rescued this dog from larger dogs that sometimes roam our street, I literally had to use a bat one time to rescue her.
In the past I have had conversations with these neighbors, and they spoke great English. But when confronted with the issue of keeping this dog quiet they say “No habla English.” Which is frustrating because I know they can!
I called Animal Control and they came to our address. After detailing what was going on the officer said that we had to file a formal complaint, it’s got to go to the city prosecutor and then to court. the whole process is understandable but damn we have full time jobs, we are full time students and have a family. this will not only take time from our schedules but also from our lives. When explaining this to the animal control officer she said, “I have many calls about this dog, but I cannot do anything until a formal complaint is filled.” and continued with “Truthfully though, if you want this resolved call the police when the dog is outside and say that there is a disturbance and a police unit will show up.”
Today in the pouring rain they once again chained this little dog up to the pole, and from 830am to 12 noon this dog barked non-stop. I saw the owner and said “Sir will you please control your dog.” He returned my question with a string of profanities.
SO what do we do? I have spent time day dreaming about paying someone to dognap the animal to making meatballs with crushed glass in it. I have even thought about getting birdseed and spreading it in their yard and give them a headache with birds. They know it’s a problem but they know no one will do anything about it… How could someone sit in their house and listen to a dog bark for 10 hours??
I wanted to add that there is someone home all the time…

What breed is right for me?

Posted by: | Comments (4)

Ok so this is for a future dog, not right now. Here is what I think will be my situation:

Hopefully be owning 2 or 3 Cavaliers
May be married, probably no kids (yet)
Hopefully will be working as a vet, and if married husband probably will be working as well
Exercise isn’t a big thing, it can need little exercise or a lot, I don’t care
Size would preferably be small to medium, but larger is ok too
Hopefully easy to house train and all around intelligent
Loves attention
Loves to play
Grooming and shedding isn’t a big deal to me

I was thinking a Toy Poodle, what do you think? Thanks!
Loki my Springer, I actually own a tri Cavy right now aha, she’s a mix though. Anyway, I agree futures always change but I love thinking about the future and trying to plan ahead ha :) I’m going to go look up the two breeds you suggested!
I love Bassets, but I’m really not into the back problems =/

And Powderpuff Cresteds are still on my list, don’t worry ;D

I’ve never met a Coonhound, so I don’t know what to say…

Like i said, hes 8 years old and we trained him when he was a puppy. He is a shi-poo (shi zue and toy poodle). He has never peed in the house and recently, well for about a year now, he has decided to pee. It started around the time we got our second dog who is much larger than him (retriever mix). I know its probably becuase he is marking his territory since we got another dog. We have tried everything including doggie dipers but they don’t fit him properly and he manages to pee through them. The retriever is the family dog, but he is my personal dog. I’m 18 and my parents are talking about giving him away if he won’t stop. Is there anything i can do ? It doesn’t matter how much we scold him for doing it he won’t stop.

ps. he is not fixed.
Please help!
he has literally peed against everything in the house. All along the bottoms of the walls, couches, tables, EVERYTHING

like having large dog for outdoor activities, something big but a couch potato is for me. i admire the look of the greyhound, i have done research on the web and am sure this would be a good breed for my family. problem–i dont have a fenced in yard, and coming up with a couple of hundred dollars at one time is hard. my vet will hold checks for me so that is no problem as far as medical care. i already have poodles, but as i said i really would love to find a new go everywhere dog.
older people living off of their social security checks should still have a right to own a dog if they want. with the leash law any dog that doesnt have a fenced in yard is always outside with their people. my poodles are not allowed to run free outside, but they still get walked and have play time. why should it be harder to adopt a greyhound than any other dog that needs a home, even people with money can be cruel or neglectful. the dogs emotional needs have to be met as well. im looking for a constant companion–why should it be that hard.
when i said my vet holds checks i meant for emergencies my dogs are all current on all care. i have worked for a vet in my younger days and would never expect anyone to advance me care unless it was totally unexpected. i could go to the pound tomorrow , or our local human society and adopt tomorrow. they use me as a reference for people that they dont know. im just saying why should it be so much harder to have a greyhound. yes they need excercise–but i have heard they are great for apartments because they are generally couch potatoes–these people have no yard.

Please only answer if you have good knowledge of these breeds.
Don’t insult my intelligence by telling me that any of these breeds are vicious. (don’t mind if its good info, just dont say for e.g. pits are vicious ect. )
I would ideally like two dogs
I understand dog psychology and pack mentality/leadership ect. (though i’m by no means expert)
I don’t have children and won’t have for about another 5yrs
I have enough time to walk/brush/train and mentally occupy them
I have no other pets
They wont be left alone too long
They will be socialised properly
They will be indoors alot-not left outside
Any other breed suggestions would be appreciated if they havesimilarr
characteristicss (guard/loyaIntelligentnt/large/obedient ect.)

Thankyou for your help!!!

I have spent over 100 hours research ing breeds. Watching dog whisperer, and some of the best dog vreed websites i can find. I am also on my way to a career in psychology and definately dont need to be told about coonfidence-self imge or looking hard. on that note ive also studied kung fu and boxing. i dont need a dog to improve my confidence-thanks
Poodles may be smart-but ugly
I want a working group for a jogging copanion and family member.
They will be obediance trained daily
Boxer is also high on the list
I just love dogs
Ive read alot already-just want to hear personaly

What Is My Ideal Dog?

Posted by: | Comments (7)

I live in Pennsylvania with a 15 year old brother, my mom, my dad, and my two cats. I’m 13. My parents both work full time and my brother and I play sports. All four of us are usually home in the morning and after 6. My dad has allergies to certain dogs, but we’re not sure which ones, and I’m looking for a small to medium sized dog. I have a large yard to exercise it in, and I would take it for walks whenever possible. I want a dog that isn’t an extreme shedder and doesn’t constantly smell bad. I’ve never had a dog before, so I’m pretty new at this. I don’t like poodles or labs. Thanks in advance for your answers!

I just bought a Yorkie / Poodle mix. He’s two months old and adorable. The puppy has gotten in the habit of biting nearly everything which is understandable because they are teething. However, despite this, his interactions with our other dog – a 2 year old Miniature Schnauzer – aren’t necessarily what I would consider nice. He is barking excessively and really biting him – on the ear, tummy… anywhere he can grab him. I can’t tell whether or not he is being playful or if he is trying to hurt the Schnauzer. I do know that puppies bite, but his teeth are quite piercing and I fear that my other dog to be hurt by this rambunctious puppy (though it is to be noted that the Schnauzer doesn’t fight back at all). Yet, I’m afraid that one day he’ll get fed up and since he’s stronger and larger, he’d accidentally hurt the pup.

Unfortunately, if this behavior persists, I fear that the puppy will not remain in my family.

Can anybody interpret this situation? I’ve never owned a puppy.
