how do you teach a dog (small and large) to run next to your bike?
ByI have a german shepard mix and a toy poodle who i think both are in need of good physical excersise.
they both come to the stables with me every day and get to have a run around for at least an hour but on days where i don’t go riding or i am ill i would like them to be able to still get some excersise. my fiance loves to ride his bike and i think it would be good for him as well as the dog.
however we are both a bit lost to how to teach a dog how to run next to the bike. does anyone know how or has a video i can watch online that shows us?
my biggest fear is that the dog runs to the side and pulls me or my fiance off or runs infront of the bike.
please advise.
thanks!

Poodle might be a little too small to run next to the bike, you’d have to ride really really slow.
The shepard might learn, but first teach it to reliable walk with you. Make sure it’s not darting in front of you or pulling you while you’re walking. Then try jogging with him, same rules, no pulling or darting in front. If he’s doing this ok, then try the bike.

Do NOT do this! Please for your sake and the dogs’ sakes. This is so very dangerous. Take them for a jog or a walk.

Have one of those wire springers that attaches to your bike and dogs’ collar.

With a bigger dog I hate to say this- but my dog learned the hard way- he headed toward the wheel I tried to stop but I ran over his paw
He has never headed toward the wheel again though and is now great at riding beside me- we do have to stop if there is a dog going by though- or he will pull me.
Use a 5 foot leash so he doesn’t have alot of room and can’t really run in front of the bike. He shouldn’t pull you to the side unless you see something odd- this may be harder with a bigger/stronger dog though.
It is SOO not cruel- I let my dog pick the pace- he has ALOT of energy and even if I jog it is too slow for him

When a dog runs next to a bike, he/she does it when they want to do it. You can’t make a dog do something and if you force them too much, they will probably nip or growl. And if your dog is tired they definatly wont run. But, if a dog has enough energy, he/she will probably run next to your bike.

First of all, it’s so not cruel as all three of my dogs love to run alongside the bikes when we go biking. It is also a sanity saver as we have a dalmation, lab and a lab/golden retreiver mix. Although I think your toy poodle is a little small, your other dog should be fine.
when i was teaching my dalmation to run along side my bike, I started to use attachment for my dog that mounted right on to my bike but it didn’t go over with her well, so I started using a traffic lead attached to something called a Dog Handle and snapped into the bar that under my bike seat. then I attached the leash to her gentle leader, climbed on the bike and started slowly to go around the block. whenever she’d try to go ahead of me or pull, i’d just put on the brakes and turn the front wheel towards her. By the end of the first ride, she’d figured out that to keep going at a nice brisk pace, she had to stay in position and not pull. She caught on really fast and at ten yrs she still loves to go.
