Is a boxer a good dog?

By

I really would like to have a boxer but I have a 5 year old son and my girlfriend is worried that it may attack him. Are they good around kids or can they be violent? any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

no cocker spaniels are the best

Yep. My grandma had one, and it was the best dog.
She would send the dog to get me at the bus stop. And believe me
I went right to grandma’s because any delay and he would grab my coat sleeve and drag me towards her house. I really loved that dog.

Actually, they are not too bright.

Any breed of dog can be a “good” dog provided he/she receives the right training. Any breed of dog can be violent if provoked. If you really want a boxer, which can be fantastic dogs, then make to assure your girlfriend that you will put in the time/money it will take to train the dog. Also, it might be a good idea to get puppy, because older dogs can come with bad behaviors that may be hard to break.

You should also teach your son about the right and wrong ways to pet and play with a dog. Right being nice, soft/gentle petting, smooth, calm voice. Wrong being hitting, pulling tails and ears, screaming/yelling at the dog.

Boxers are very loyal and loving with children, and most of all a dog is what you make of him or her, if your dog is loved he will give love back.

Boxers are good dogs. There is a smaller breed of boxer you might look into.

They are usually good if they’re raised right. I have a Pit Bull. We take him out to a park where there are little kids & they all come over & pet him.

OMG! Boxers are absolutely wonderful dogs!! They only get the mean reputation because of owners who raise them mean. Every Boxer I have ever met in my life would lick you to death before they even thought of biting :) . If you train your pup at an early age not to jump up on people, your 5 year old will have no trouble whatsoever with a Boxer. My younger brother (he’s 15) owns a Boxer. He is sooo sweet. He hates it when you stop petting/loving on him. I have numerous friends, some breeders, who own Boxers. Yet again, they are all extremely friendly or nice. If you are going to be scared of a dog that will bite your kid, don’t get a small dog. They are generally the ones who will bite. Not that I don’t like small dogs, but that’s not what you asked…

Hope this was helpful, and I hope you do get a Boxer. You will NOT regret it, I promise.

Boxer are recognized to be one of the best family dogs. Very good with children, however Boxers are also short-lived dogs. Average lifespan is 8.

I have a boxer. She is an awsome dog!!!! Boxers are soooo loyal and friendly. They are clowns and will keep you laughing!! My boxer is almost 5 years old and lets my grandchildren ages 4 and 5 climb all over her.

Boxers are great dogs big hearted and lots of fun. They are however very large dogs that can do a lot of damage to a small person even if they don’t intend to do great harm. The large breed dogs have to be well trained and should not be alone with children for a few years until you know thier temperment. Temperment also changes with maturity so you need to keep an eye on this.

I’VE had my boxer for about 6 yrs.. he’s 12yrs. old now.. it was
either me take him, or him being put to sleep… he is the best
thing that ever happened to our lives…. me, my husband,
and my kids… ages now 17 and 20……. he’s protective,
sweet, adorable, and cute but still old…. arthritis is
setting in……. will take care of him like a child in his old
age, just because he has showed us so much of his
love…..

We have a boxer, and they are really good dogs. Really smart, and pick up on commands really quick. Our boxer learned “Sit” by the time she was 9 weeks old. She is 4 months old now, and is pretty much 95% housetrained. She could get rough a bit with my daughter, aged 3, but most puppies are crazy little things.

The only downsides is how big they get!! Ours barely turned 4 months old today, and she almost weighs 20lbs already. I think she’s going to get up to about 50-60lbs. She was the runt of the litter, so her siblings were bigger.
