What dog breed do you suggest?

By

I’m am looking into getting a puppy sometime this year… but am unsure as to which breed. I live with my boyfriend who has a large labrador retriever, so I do not want any toy or small breeds that could get hurt by the lab, but nothing so big that I can’t control it/afford to feed it!!

Any suggestions?

Those retired racing Greyhounds make wonderful and loving pets.

PS – They really need homes too!

shih tzu lahsa, they are wonderful! Smart, obedient, playful and friendly. I have one and love him.

go to the shelter or the pound (:

plenty of gorgeous dogs of all shapes and sizes.
remember: dont go to a pet store or get a dog from a newspaper ad or buy online. chances are the pup you look at will come from a puppy mill.

save a life! good lucky finding the perfect pup!

Go to your local shelter and bring your boyfriend’s dog with you so you know they’ll get along. Tell the people at the shelter what you’re looking for and they’ll help you find the perfect dog for you. Good luck.

A boxer. They are really fun.

Get another labrador! Or a golden retriever. Or a germanshepherd. But they shed hair, so I don’t know how comfortable you will be with them. Labradors and Shepherds are supposed to get along VERY well.

how about another lab? they would probably get along well and it would match all the requirements of a dog you already have so you know you would be able to handle it.

i think a german sheperd may work out too.

perhaps a collie or a border collie, it all really depends on how active you are.

also pls look in shelters and on petfinder.com, you would likely find a great dog on there for you.

good luck

sounds to me like if you’re worried about controling and affording a dog you shouldn’t even think about getting one. there’s more financial responsibility to owning a dog than just food and shots. medical emergencies and sickness can happen to even the best pet owners. if you insist on getting one i would go with a larger spaniel breed. they have some of the same natures as labs. the only down side to that breed is most require regular grooming. maybe a border collie??? check out http://www.akc.org. they have all kinds of info on dog breeds!

I would not suggest an Akita, a Pit Bull or any of the hound family. Perhaps a Jack Russell terrier, but read up on them first. The article I linked you to will give you some useful input – and it’s not the standard website blurb about dogs.

i have a chocolate lab she weighs about 60 pounds (not to big but not to small) i strongly recommend it.

would avoid beagle, and great dane (huge).

But what ever you like go for it!!

I saw a labra-doodle (sic. ?) the other day for the first time and it was so cute ! He was the size of a golden retriever and had light golden hair like a golden retriever but wavy like a poodle !

his owner said he had the disposition like his labrador half (friendly, loyal, good with kids) and the smarts of it’s poodle half. this particular dog was being trained as a service dog for adults with disabilities.

Well, a Siberian Husky might. It grows up to 60 pounds, not too big, and can defend itself from the lab. It can stay outside in the cold, up to minus 75 degrees! It’s loving, but not clingy, and enjoys a good round of tug of war or tag. It makes a good running partner and since it’s a pack animal, it likes to be with lots of people, especially other dogs. It has something called a snow nose and it’s sort of like an indicator. When it’s black, it’s warm, and when it’s pinkish black, it’s cold. It has 2 layers of fur, so it can keep your feet warm. It’s also money saving because it doesn’t need to eat that much food. When it’s grown, it needs only one meal. When it’s a puppy, it needs two, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. It also washes it self and is very clean. It’s a perfect dog! It also howls when it’s hungry though, but that barely happens. It’s easy to breed and it’s easy to teach them things. They’re smart too, so they listen to simple and complex voice commands, such as “sit” and “jump” and even things like “shake my hand.” It’s easy to sleep with too, because it doesn’t bark in the middle of the night. But before you sleep, you should leave a bowl of water and a little bit of food because it can get thirsty sometimes. Overall, it’s a really really good dog. I wish my parents can buy one for me…

Spaniel- coocker, english etc
golden retriever

if in my case i would go for the Spaniel because they are not so big but then they are not so small, they are also a playful dog as my nan has got one and he is 11 and is still very playful, funny and lovable!
its up to you though! maybe ask someone at the place you are getting the dog from to get some really good advise if you take your boyfriends dog with you they may be able to see if the dogs you like and your boyfriends dog gets on well!
Good luck in finding a dog that you want!

Go to your local shelter or get another labrador.

English Bulldog for sure – they are the best dogs EVER – and they are smart (even though they may not look so smart)!
